code clean-up!

cory foy put this topic bluntly, "as developers, system admins, and a variety of other roles in IT, we have to deal with code on a daily basis. sometimes it's just one-off scripts we never have to see again. sometimes we stare at something that, for the life of us, we can't understand how it came out of a human mind (or, as the book puts it, has a high WTF/minute count). but there is a time when you find code that is a joy to use, to read and to understand. clean code sets out to help developers write that third kind of code through a series of essay-type chapters on a variety of topics. but does it really help?"

i always believe that a clean code is a good code. having had experience as an IT consultant, we come and go to different projects. a critical part in our job is to transition our codes to someone else.
most of the problems however arise when facing messy codes (plus no docos!). in effect, the learning curve takes longer, business cost is higher, and productivity is lower.

so what causes a bad code? from experience, i would list these factors:
time pressure. with limited and immovable due dates, most programmers tend to be lenient in cleaning up their codes just to be able to deliver on time.
training deficiency. not being able to learn best practices,
no coding standards. no standards set from the very start of the development!

i consider chris coyler of smashing magazine's 12 Principles For Keeping Your Code Clean as a good read and a best practice.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg Faces Congress

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg faced the senate judiciary and commerce committees today, in light of the recent data breach impacting over 87 million of its users.  
on march-21 addressing the cambridge analytica situation, "We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you. I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it," mark posted.

PINOY OFWs Beware of New E-Mail Scam

an email scam has been recently reported targeting the PINOY Overseas Contract Workers (OFWs). 

the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) advised everyone to ignore emails telling them they have qualified and may apply as a nurse or caregiver at the Canadian Virtual Hospice in Winnipeg, Canada.  

the said email further added that applying for the job does not have hidden charges and that the employer will shoulder the airfare, work permit fee, and working visa (sounds interesting huh?). now the catch... the candidate is told to pay at a designated Western Union and/or LBC account, for the coaching and medical exam fees and to reserve a slot at the embassy for the coaching seminar. 

its unnerving how some take advantage of people who are just trying to earn a better and honest living.  please share this, be aware.
