Tuesday turned out to be "Black Tuesday" as a sign of protest initiated by the Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance (PIFA).

BIR to Tax Online Traders

the Philippine Bureau of Internal Revenue recently announced that they will start taxing online traders, this news drew different reactions from the online community thinking this law would impact continuous growth of eCommerce in the country.

Janette Toral, a technical consultant of the congressional oversight committee for the e-Commerce Law, said the BIR’s statements, apart from being vague, were made without consulting e-commerce stakeholders, and could end up hurting small online traders, and the growth potentials of the sector as a whole.

“E-Commerce should be tax-neutral, meaning whatever is applicable offline should be the same online,” Toral explained. “Kailangan nilang pag-aralan nang mabuti ito to the point na hindi siya mag-di-discriminate (They (BIR) should study this move thoroughly as to not discriminate) against online [traders] ”

"Our approach is to offer the application for free to all LGUs. LGUs will however have to contract private sector IT consultants certified for the eBPLS for their particular customizations and commissioning," Casambre said.
