Google Recognizes Grace Hopper's 107th Birthday

Google today recognizes via a doodle one of the pioneers in Information Technology, Grace Hopper.

Grace Brewster Murray worked on a device called the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, which worked out flight trajectories for rockets and was later used by the Manhattan Project scientists to build the atomic bomb.

in the 50s, Hopper was able to convince government agencies to agree that programs should be written close to the English language (instead of machine codes - the 0's and 1's) thus Common Business Programming Language or COBOL was born. this later paved way for modern day computer languages.  she was also the one who coined "debugging" for they found a moth in a relay which affected their operation (this can be found in the Smithsonian Museum).

known also as "Amazing Grace," Hopper  served as director of the US Navy Programming Languages Group in the Navy's Office of Information Systems Planning and ultimately rose to the rank of rear admi…

Super Typhoon Hits Philippines

as of writing, super typhoon - yolanda (internationally named haiyan) is rampaging the country. the typhoon is said to be the strongest ever in recorded history to hit land, is also a category 5 hurricane pretty much like katrina.

in the midst of this, an encouraging comment in the CNN headline post is worth sharing c/o dudesk001

"Time to get to the know the hardy Filipino people...unbelievably resilient, long suffering, good natured, uber friendly, loyal, ingenious, and a bunch of survivors. At the end of the day the Filipinos will just shake off the dirt from their clothes and thongs and go about their business...and SMILE. They do not complain much, they will bear as long as they can. Maybe this is why they were given the 'privilege' of bearing the burden of the strongest typhoon ever recorded. The indomitable human spirit at its finest."

with faith, we'll all get through this - PINOYs will rise up... we always do!

Pinoy Freelance Writers Identified Creating Fake Online Reviews

after a year-long undercover investigation of manipulated consumer reviews on various travel websites, 19 companies have been identified and agreed to cease their operations whose freelance writers are based in the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Eastern Europe.

"Operation Clean Turf"conducted investigation into the reputation management industry and found that several companies had flooded the internet with fake consumer reviews such as Yelp, Google Local, and CitySearch.

receiving $1 to %10 per review seems to be really appealing, however consumers reading fake reviews would impact these businesses and its future. these 19 companies thus violated multiple state laws against false advertising and engaged in illegal and deceptive business practices.

"Consumers rely on reviews from their peers to make daily purchasing decisions on anything from food and clothing to recreation and sightseeing," New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said. "This investigation i…

Heineken's Dropped: Philippines 1 (Hell in Paradise)

Heineken's "Dropped" ad series has previously gone viral with a guy dropped in Alaska, another dropped in Cambodia.  this time around, Irish Murray and Polish Jakub were both blindfolded, traveled on trike/bus in bumpy roads, on a boat with heavy rains and waves, then handcuffed together and dropped on an island in the Philippines! :)

Heineken wanted to know what men truly are made of when taken out of their daily lives and dropped into the great unknown. As they say, "Legends aren't born, they're dropped."

Pinoy Hackers Deface more than 30 Govt Websites

PINOY hackers defaced more than 30 government websites today August 26, and their message is aligned with the Million People March in Luneta to abolish the pork barrel system.

Here is the text shown in the sites posted by Anonymous Philippines

We Appreciate the fact that you have now responded to the public clamor to abolish the PDAF. However, the alternative package of still allowing the Congressmen and Senators to identify sponsored projects to be funded, albeit as line items in the annual budget, continues to leave MONEY with grasp of conniving and corrupt public officials.

In effect, this merely shifted the timeframe upon when these projects are identified and approved.

We Pursue our call for you to completely abolish the Pork barrel system!

We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not Forgive. We do not Forget

The corrupt fear us. The honest support us. The heroic join us.

Government of the Philippines, It's too late to expect us!

To Gilas Pilipinas from a Pinoy Basketball Fan

Dear Gilas Pilipinas,

Congratulations on your historical win against arch-nemesis South Korea last night and booking a ticket to the Fiba World Cup in Spain! You made time stand still and the whole country rejoicing! Your efforts and sacrifices are greatly appreciated.   However the quest for asian basketball supremacy does not end there.  Yet again we ask you once more - we need one more push, one more win!

Growing up in a basketball-loving family, hearing old stories on how the Philippines once dominated Asia made me always imagine how it feels like.  Saddened how in recent decades our country got erased from the map of world basketball and reading forum comments from other countries how they looked down at Pinoy basketeers, for a basketball fanatic this was hard to bear.

BUT today you have a chance to re-carve history and let this generation know how it feels like to be the asian champs once again, to regain that respect for the game PINOYs loved the most - basketball.  Whatever hap…
